There are countless ways to spruce up and/or change your green soup to add variety and flavor. Let’s take this recipe from the other day and see what some of our options.

1 cup chopped asparagus (aprox 9 spears)

½ an avocado

2 cups spinach

1 spear celery

1 clove garlic

1 green onion

½ – 1 tsp celtic sea salt

1 tsp lemon juice

1 tsp or more spirulina powder

1 cup water (to desired consistency)

Add all ingredients to vitamix. Blend starting at low speed and then increasing to highest speed. When warm to the touch, but not too hot, check for flavor, making any needed adjustments, and enjoy!

Okay, so you have this recipe but you don’t have any asparagus or you just don’t like it. Fine, grab a cup of something else to add. My first grab would probable be frozen peas. Not fresh, but always on hand, and they add a nice flavor.

What about the green onion? Don’t have one of those, no problem. Just slice off a piece of any other onion you’ve got hanging around or add a tsp of onion powder or dried onion.

No lemon? Try a tsp of lime juice or apple cider vinegar.

Haven’t ordered your Spirulina powder yet? Use Chlorella or Vitamineral Green powder instead, or, if you have to, omit the green powder all together.

Fresh out of avocado? Bummer. But don’t worry. You can always add a tablespoon or two of your favorite oil or nut butter instead.

Are you beginning to see that the options here are endless? You’ll discover some wonderful flavor combinations over time. When you find something really tasty, make sure and write it down so you can make it again.

Here are some other ingredients I have added to soups at times. A lot of these ingredients get thrown in because they’re in the fridge and need to be eaten.

Fresh cilantro or basil

Fresh parsley or dill

Spring Mix

Red, yellow or orange bell pepper

Cumin

Corriander

Dash of Cayanne

Take a large ruby red grapefruit and juice it with a simple citrus juicer. To the grapefruit juice, I add enough water to make about 1 ½ cups and then stir in 1-2 tsp of the green powder. It’s a fast, simple, power-packed way to start the day.

As time went on, and my taste buds became more accustomed to healthier foods and flavors, I was then able to add powders such as vitamineral green and spirulina to my green soups. It’s gotten to the point now that I crave the taste of spirulina that I can take it straight or sprinkle it on my salads, add it to pates, etc. Chlorella powder is delicious too. I’ll add that to just about anything as well.

Keep in mind, just do baby steps. Add ½ to 1 tsp to an entire batch/recipe to start and then increase the amount over time as your taste buds adjust. This could take months, maybe even years, so don’t force it and don’t stress if you don’t like it at first. The last thing you want to do is take a delicious food creation that you love and drastically change the flavor of it so much that you no longer want to eat it.

Be patient with yourself as you acquire tastes for certain foods, and be creative with ways get the nutrients your body needs. You may find that you just love and crave certain green powders, like I do with spirulina, or you may just decide that green powders aren’t for you.

Here’s a soup recipe I came up with one cold afternoon when I wanted something warm and green to eat.

1 cup chopped asparagus (aprox 9 spears)

½ an avocado

2 cups spinach

1 spear celery

1 clove garlic

1 green onion

½ – 1 tsp celtic sea salt

1 tsp lemon juice

1 tsp or more spirulina powder

1 cup water (to desired consistency)

Add all ingredients to vitamix. Blend starting at low speed and then increasing to highest speed. When warm to the touch, but not too hot, check for flavor, making any needed adjustments, and enjoy!

Transitional Recipes are so important to those who are striving to change the way they eat. Many raw recipes that contain a lot of nuts, and sweeteners need to be considered as transitional. These recipes serve their purpose in giving you a healthier food choice to substitute for something less healthy that you are craving. For example, a raw milkshake is a beautiful substitute for a conventional shake. As you transition from a Standard American Diet (SAD) to a raw diet, you will need comfort foods to help you be successful. So, choosing a homemade shake with fresh almond milk and strawberries vs. a shake from the nearest drive through, make a huge difference. However, once the transition is made and you are comfortable and confident with a living foods diet, eliminating the complex recipes especially the higher fat (nuts and oils) and sweet foods is essential to achieving your weight and overall health goals.

You will find that as you continue on your healing journey with raw food, you will eliminate specific foods or ingredients as you go. You will learn more as you research and attend classes, and you will also learn how your body speaks to you. As your diet grows cleaner, your body, mind and spirit become clearer. Your body will let you know what foods it needs and which foods it will not tolerate. Everyone is different, and your body’s needs are different day to day, week to week. This journey of healing should not have to look a certain way. It does not need to match what others are doing. Do what is best for you, and don’t worry about what others are doing. One day at a time, one meal at a time. You can do it!

If you’re anything like me, you want to do everything within reason to achieve optimum health, including taking green powders regularly, but the taste of these super food powders doesn’t always agree with you. When I first started taking Spirulina, Vitamineral Green, Greener Grasses, and other powders such as Kelp and Bladderwrack, I tried adding them to water, juice, soups or smoothies and found that it was, for the most part, unbearable. The immediate solution I found was to encapsulate the powders and just take them like a vitamin. Having empty capsules around the house comes in so handy. You can use them to take powders, tinctures, essential oils; pretty much anything you need to get down that you don’t particularly want to taste. Encapsulating is an easy way to get around this taste issue that has really worked well for me, and it makes taking these green powders doable for everyone in the family.

I purchased my first capsule filler machine 10 years ago and still have the same one. It is simple to use and only takes minutes to get a weeks supply of capsules filled. I love having it!

Last night, Kevin Gianni launched his “Great Health Debate” by hosting a call with Dr. Joseph Mercola and Dr. Gabriel Cousens. Both are highly regarded experts in the field of diet and nutrition. Dr. Mercola encourages people to consume animal products while Dr. Cousins does not. Though they have differing views on diets, they, for the most part, agreed on many things:
1.	The basis of all healthy diets is an abundance of fresh organic fruits and vegetables
2.	There is not one specific diet that can be followed by everyone. For optimal health, you must provide your body with what it specifically needs.
3.	Sufficient protein intake is very important
4.	If you choose to follow an exclusively vegan diet, you must be more vigilant in ensuring you’re getting all the essential nutrients your body needs.

Dr. Cousens suggests spirulina and chlorella powders as wonderful sources of protein, while Dr. Mercola himself consumes 2 to 6 raw eggs a day as his main source of protein.

I’ve had this book since it was published in 2009 and have found it to be a wonderful resource. I keep it handy on my bookshelf and enjoy referencing it regularly. It’s full of information about various superfoods and is very easy to read and understand. For example, there are 18 pages that cover hempseed; history, facts, legends, benefits, minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, how to use hempseed, what types of products to look for, etc. and he also includes 5 different hempseed recipes.

As a matter of fact, Wolfe includes a variety of recipes for each superfood highlighted in the book and even has a glossary of recipe ingredients for those of use who are not familiar with things such as Chanca Piedra or Agaricus blazei.

The back of the book is full of resources and additional information. If you want to integrate more superfoods into your daily intake, this book is a great place to start!

Here’s another transitional recipe that is very quick and easy. However, you must soak the cashews overnight or the recipe will not work.
